5-22-13 GAME THREAD: A Public Service Announcement

Game Time: 1:10 in NY, 12:10 in Ashland

Lineups:

TBA

Leading Off

Let's stop beating around the bush.

Obviously, things haven't been all that great around here this season. We've had a hard time getting thread starters; we've lost key contributers and commenters; we've been snippy/snarky/downright rude to one another over and over again. The 2013 Reds October has been nothing like the 2010-2012 Reds October, or its previous incarnations.

And if, right now, you're thinking, 'yeah Ash; I can tell you a person or two who's been to blame!' stop. Because it hasn't been one or two people; it's been all of us. There isn't a single person on this board/blog/whatever you want to call it that's been a saint, and a major part of the problem has been when we've pretended that we are.

The point is, things have sucked. So what do we do about it? Some of it is, clearly, unavoidable. If people don't want to participate anymore, then there's nothing we can do to change their minds. And, as transparent as I can be on a board where I'm using an alter ego, that hurts. It feels like rejection, and that's a feeling no one enjoys.

But I think that sometimes we take that hurt out on the people who are still here. We punish the very people that are in this with us. And that can create a resentment and a negative experience that far surpasses any rejection we might feel from those who have gone.

I don't want the Reds October of 2010-2012; as the great Gaslight Anthem have sung, "God help the man who says, 'If you'd have known me when' - old haunts are for forgotten ghosts." I want the Reds October of 2013 to be a place where I can forget about the shit of every day life and talk about the Reds with some old friends. If that's too much to ask, then so be it; but I don't think it is.

Long story short - let's police ourselves, let's have a good time, and let's give each other a little more grace. Not everyone reacts the same way to things, so let's recognize the diversity of opinion and thought on this board and be done with the side arguments and snippy comments.

Also, Go Reds.

I didn't like that RPA and Griz have disappeared but what I dislike more is a know it all attitudes and contrarian arguments for the sake of argument. I'm not a glass half full kinda guy and if that doesn't sit well then I hear about it here. Don't like it and will continue not liking it.

Since this is becoming the Fantasyland happy place where you can't be yourself I will be myself elsewhere. I will still read and post from time to time but I'm just not having fun here anymore.

I don't understand why anyone would be upset by people disagreeing with what they say on a chat board about baseball, so long as it isn't personally insulting.

I'd suggest that every poster might find life easier and more relaxing if they dropped any expectation of convincing anyone else of anything -- or proving how right they are -- and just enjoyed the starters, the games, and the conversation.

Anyone who feels compelled to insult other folks as part of  being themselves might want to reevaluate whether they _should_ be that way.

You and I are very similar in how we view not only this board by how we process sports in general. I agree completely with what you're saying (and 90% of what you've said over the last several years).

Point is, I want this to be a place where we can be ourselves. Hopefully that can happen.

Yes--and while some may be glass half empty personalities, I am  not and cannot be (nor do I want to be).  In a way, this IS fantasyland--it certainly isn't my life or anyone else's life here.

All sides and those in the middle or those who switch back and forth should feel free to post without nastiness. Disagreement is totally OK, though.

Anyone with a brain knew Latos shouldn't have faced Murphy or Ankiel. Dusty had him face both of them.

Marshall is the highest paid lefty reliever in baseball. If you don't use him there, why have him on the team at all?

Indefensible.

And when we lose this division by a game or three, it's going to be 100% on Dusty not being able to manage a bullpen.

wonder how much influence Bryan Price has on bullpen management?  I have wondered this before when I have heard that he makes a lot of pitching decisions. There is a bullpen coach, but I'm sure he is just the messenger, not the instigator, but I have no realidea about Price's role

bjsReds1
bjsReds1
5/22/2013 3:42:43 PM #

It doesn't matter.  Ultimately it's Dusty's call as the guy in charge.  Plus, Dusty has a history of being bad at bullpen management long before he worked with Price.  It cost him a World Series and it's cost his teams multiple games since.

I do too honestly.  My guess is the problem is consistency.  I understand what Dusty was doing because the bullpen has blown several games for Latos this year.  I don't agree with it there but I do understand why he did it.

Jabberwocky

That would be Porky Lopez.  He's a former catcher that basically tells whoever calls that the pitcher is ready or not.  He's funny as all get out and a really good guy.  He knows the pitchers almost as well as Price.

Been at my son's preschool graduation.  Got home just in time to see the Reds take the lead.  Then watch Dusty leave in Latos to face two lefties that had 3 of the 6 hits he'd given up.

The Reds may yet win this game, but Dusty Baker is just a damn fool when it comes to managing a game in innings 7-9.  He's one of the worst there is.  As good as he is at everything else, this one weakness is likely going to cost him a chance to ever win a World Series as there are too many games like this in the playoffs.  He's already cost himself one World Series.  The man is just awful at bullpen management.

Totally agreed with everyone else.  As Ash said, what in the world is Marshall on this team for?

ashlandateam2
ashlandateam2
5/22/2013 3:45:19 PM #

I don't care what Ankiel is hitting, either - he's hit rockets today. And Murphy's been up over .300 all year. We talk a lot about Dusty managing by 'the book,' but 'the book' says that when your pitcher is at 100 pitches/facing the lineup for the fourth time, you have relievers ready.

Over and over and over and over again, Dusty does this. And as Mary said, if Price has to do with it? Then fine - over and over and over he does it. I don't care. It's idiotic.

And if you're Votto/Cozart/Phillips/Bruce - the guys who scratched out 4 runs off of one of the toughest pitchers in all of baseball - it's got to be beyond demoralizing.

Walt Jocketty gave two late inning relievers $40 million. And in a tie game with a fully rested bullpen, those guys are sitting in favor of J.J. Hoover and Alfredo Simon.

Indefensible.

I wonder if Broxton is hurt.  He's looked terrible for a while, IMO.  Marshall, I don't get, but he could be ailing too.  Still, I think you have to go to someone else there.  LeCure has pitched a lot, but surely he could have gotten one out.

Mary

5/22/2013 3:53:14 PM #

you may have there, bj.  No one is going to say anything  unless it is bad enough that the pitcher is going to the DL, but Marshall has already been there once so far this year, and could well still not be right; Broxton hasn't been effective lately, and I wonder how he is as well.

ashlandateam2

If Marshall can only pitch every four days, he needs to go back on the DL.

Today was perfectly set up. Two run lead, nine outs to go. Off day tomorrow, Marshall/Broxton/Chapman hadn't thrown last night.

That's an idiot proof situation. There's no reason to think there - just do what every other team on the planet does and you win. Period.

Or you don't, and then you tip your cap and say they beat you. But at they're not beating you; Dusty gave this game away.

Ash, what's maddening is the way this team gives away games on decisions like this.  Last year they won 97 games, but Dusty probably gave away at least a half dozen wins.  Ultimately, it didn't matter.

This year, those give away games might be the difference in winning the division or playing in the Wild Card game.

Or the Reds could fight like they do and render Dusty's stupid decisions pointless by playing through the adversity to win.

Regardless of what Dusty did with Latos, what the Reds have done this game offensively is simply amazing and shows how far this team has come.  They scored more runs than anyone else did against one of the best pitchers in baseball.  Now, they've scored at least 3 runs against a closer with an ERA under 1 coming into the game.

That explains my point in the last thread about games against teams under .500.  This is a playoff type game.  Sure the Mets are bad, but not when Harvey and Parnell are on the hill.  Beating those games is what playoff teams and teams contending for World Series do.

Hey gang. Nice win for a sweep no matter how ugly. There are no bad sweeps.

I have not been around for a few days, as I have been sick as a dog with what is believed to be gallbladder attacks. Truth is, i have been kind of sick off and on for most of the season.

On the starter, hope I have not been abusive to anyone, if I have, then I want to apologize. We coaches can be abusive and not know it, you know!

Seriously, I am being honest. You know, what happens lots of times once you become a winner, and having a good season, or, even making the playoffs is almost a sure thing, you can get cantankerous, start gripping a little more. Sounds kind of crazy, but I think it is often true. I know that is how I was as a coach. If things were going to well, I felt I had to find some things to bitch about--as i did not have to worry about having a winning season, make a good showing in the tourneys, etc. I guess it is a form of being spoiled, feeling entitled? Maybe we are a little that way as fans? I will plead guilty.

At any rate, most of the air has been cleared, so lets enjoy the rest of the season--with a little sniping along the way, of course!

Here's the thing on Frazier's wife - yes, she's beyond attractive. But she's almost not even a real person. No, really - she looks like she was drawn by an artist who was given the task, 'create the most prototypical hot chick ever.' She's basically a living Barbie doll.

All of this sounds fine in theory, but in execution, I prefer my chicks to have a little more character and individuality. I prefer the craziness. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I get that Frazier's wife is undoubtedly, objectively hotter. But I think Dallas would be more fun. You know. When it came down to it.

(And by 'it,' I absolutely mean having a nice dinner and meeting Mom and Dad. And not anything else at all.)

I dont know if you would have liked the version we saw in AZ. Tats, the baggage, added to the ever expanding waist line are not a good combo. Just can't take the hat trick.

I'll settle for the little gymnast.

OK so everyone here hates Howard stern but the last 2 weeks of interviews(all more than an hour uninterrupted by commercials) were amazing. The list is fantastic, Rod Stewart, ZZ Top(performed too), JJ Abrahms, The original MTV DJ's, Rob Cordrey, Roger Daltrey, Bill Hader(SNL) Zack Braff, Lisa Lampinelli and Jimmy Kimmell.

Good stuff from Rod Stewart...Where would you hear these comments? Fantastic stuff.

Sorry but I like what I like.

Champ,

Appreciate the compliment. Mostly I was pretty even keeled, but I did throw a few tantrums, also a jacket or two, ties, into the stands over officiating calls on occasion. Once I got a tie hung on my neck while trying to throw a fit--at our No.1 rival in a very close game. Needless to say, their fans went nuts, all started grabbing their necks, shaking their heads. I guess I was not very good at being really frustrated. You are right, however, I always left my venom on the floor, be it a kid, or a official, opposing coach, etc.

Agree with all, "Muffin" does not need Dallas throwing any fuel on his fire. He has enough problem keeping himself under control--which he has been much better at this year, by the way.

Otter,

Wives accuse all of us of being clueless--probably because we are.

"Pastrygate" is much better than prostitute-gate, speed-gate, etc., so, Chapman is getting there also!

Slowey leaves start injured; Marlins running out of All-Star candidates http://cbsprt.co/1a928rn  via @cbssports

This situation can really make a mockery of AS selection--someone has to be named from that team (and from Houston--better hope Altuve is healthy then)

I, for one, hope that Altuve doesn't keep BP from the game like he did last year. That was complete and utter BS.

Do you really think Carp is done with the reports that he's throwing again and possibly going to be in the rotation by the All Star break?

Personally, I hope he does come back because I think he'll ruin the chemistry on that team.  He needs to give it up.  He might come back, but he won't ever be great again.
